Testimonies of Healing
My gratitude will no longer permit me to delay in expressing profound thankfulness for the wonderful revelation of Truth given to the world by our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, and for the health and happiness which I enjoy to-day because of its ministration. I shall never cease to be grateful that I had some understanding of Christian Science at the time of a serious illness, and could therefore be surrounded by the tireless love and wisdom of a Christian Science practitioner and a Christian Science nurse; for by their faithful work the "last enemy" was held in abeyance, and during days of unconsciousness and of intense suffering I was sustained.
Several years ago, with a friend, I attended a Sunday morning service in a Christian Science church, and saw on the wall behind the desk the following statement from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy ( p. 494 ): "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need.
It is just a few years since I heard for the first time the words, "God is Love. " I am grateful to those who have helped me to realize the truth of this statement.
I had been in poor health for many months and had given up hope of recovery, yet had been praying that if Christian Science was of God someone would come and present it to me—and then my mother suggested that she consult a Christian Science practitioner about my case. In order to let God lead, I made reply to my mother's suggestion with these words: "We have a right to try the doctrine and see whether it be of God.
Just before taking up the study of Christian Science, I was dissatisfied with what I thought was life. I was a member of an orthodox church and always enjoyed the sermons and the work of the Sunday school, yet I always wondered what the "wisdom" and "understanding" could be of which we read in the Bible.
It is with a heart full of gratitude that I should like to express my thanks for what Christian Science has done for me, and is doing for all of us. To know that God fills all space and is a very present help at all times and in all things, has been a great comfort to me.
In 1920 I was healed in Christian Science of tuberculosis of the lungs. According to the doctor's diagnosis and an X-ray photograph it seemed certain that this disease would end fatally, but instead I was healed in a surprisingly short time.
I did not come into Christian Science for physical healing but for a better understanding of God, although my first healing came almost at once. The doctors and specialists had doomed me to wear glasses always, as they claimed I was born with bad eyes and must carry two pairs of glasses with me.
It seems to me that I must express my gratitude for what the knowledge of Christian Science has helped me to demonstrate. Several years ago, when teaching in a town where there were no other Scientists, I got up in the night to go to another room, thinking that I knew the way without a light; instead, I plunged headfirst down the back stairs, landing on my head and left shoulder.
It is with a heart overflowing with gratitude to our loving Father-Mother God, to Mrs. Eddy, and to the loving ones whom I have met since coming into Christian Science, and who have been such a help to me, that I write this testimony.
