Testimonies of Healing
One day a painful condition developed in my mouth and within a few hours had spread over my entire face. I spent most of the night in prayer, trying to realize the unreality of sickness and pain, which Christian Science teaches.
When I was a young girl I lived near a friend who was a Christian Scientist. After my marriage an aunt wrote asking me to look into Christian Science; so I called my friend, and she brought me a copy of the Sentinel , which I read from cover to cover.
In my late teens I thought there was some enjoyment in smoking and drinking. Some of my friends seemed to be having fun doing both; so I decided to join them.
A sister of mine in Canada who had been healed of tuberculosis through Science wrote and recommended that I visit a Christian Science practitioner, because for months I had experienced severe pain night and day in my back and in one leg. I had had many different kinds of medical treatment but had received only temporary relief.
In October, 1939, a testimony of mine appeared in the Journal, and I feel it is time to express again my sincere and grateful thanks for the teachings of Christian Science. Many healings have taken place in the intervening years; one was a healing of the use of tea and coffee.
At a time when my husband and I were building our house and furnishing it with antiques, we answered an advertisement in the paper inserted by a woman who was a dealer in antiques. One evening, when we were in her home looking at some old glass, we noticed a full-length portrait of a lovely woman.
It was my privilege to attend the Christian Science Sunday School from the time I was four years old until the age of twenty and to be encouraged at home to turn to God, "a very present help in trouble," as the Bible tells us He is ( Ps. 46:1 ).
The Bible words from Isaiah (11:6) , "A little child shall lead them," came true in my family. It was through my daughter's healing of a serious physical ailment that my children and I were led into the religion of Christian Science.
My decision to turn to Christian Science as the true and exclusive way of Life was made while I was watching one of the television programs entitled "How Christian Science Heals. " My wife had been introduced to Science by friends of ours and had attended a few Sunday services; she felt what she had heard was the truth for which she had been searching.
" Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled" ( Matt. 5:6 ) was Jesus' assurance, and his words certainly have been proved true in my experience.
