Testimonies of Healing
Nearly twenty years ago a friend asked me to see a Christian Science practitioner about a chronic throat condition. With no thought of being healed, but simply that he might not consider me narrow-minded, I went to see a practitioner.
My bringing up was in the orthodox faith, and I adhered to it until a little past the age of twenty, when, through a healing of a member of the family, I was led to accept Christian Science. I promised myself that if I became ill I would ask for Science help, but when, shortly afterwards, I was faced with blood poisoning and inflammation of the bladder, I thought the illness too serious and called upon a physician.
Mrs. Eddy says in the opening line of the Preface to Science and Health ( p.
It is with great joy and gratitude that I testify to the healing power of Christian Science. We can never be grateful enough to our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, for giving us a clearer understanding of the Christ, Truth, which heals all discord and inharmonious conditions.
The summer of 1925 always stands out vividly to me, for I feel that it was then I began to know God as Life. Never having known what it meant to be well, I had finally reached the point where hope and encouragement from medical aid were denied me.
From my own experience I can truthfully testify that there certainly is a good God to whom we may go for help and comfort. I gave up study for the ministry in 1910, because at that time I doubted God's existence, and as my prayers for a revelation of God appeared not to be answered, I decided to seek Him in my life experience, as many people in Bible times had sought and found Him.
In Psalms we read, "Blessed is the man whom thou choosest, and causest to approach unto thee, that he may dwell in thy courts: we shall be satisfied with the goodness of thy house, even of thy holy temple. " In considering this verse in Psalms I am reminded of God's goodness to me, and I feel I should like to share my experience, hoping that it may encourage others who are endeavoring to extricate themselves from the mesmerism of materia medica, as well as other material systems.
The regenerating and healing effect of Christian Science has been demonstrated many times in my experience. A dear relative, a Christian Scientist, presented proof to me, about twelve years ago, that peace could be experienced where fear seemed to grip me.
In "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 188) our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, writes, "It is the translator, not the original Word, who presents as being first that which appears second, material, and mortal; and as last, that which is primal, spiritual, and eternal.
The change which has taken place in my thinking, and consequently in my daily experience, during the years that I have been studying Christian Science, increases my gratitude to Mary Baker Eddy. When understood, Science meets all human needs.
