Testimonies of Healing
For about fifteen years "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy was in our home and was read daily by my father. Because of prejudice toward and ignorance of the teachings of this Science, my mother would have nothing to do with it and the children thought little about it.
While I was yet quite new in Science, our daughter was born. The doctor, who knew I was having a Christian Science practitioner, said that if it had not been for my faith the baby would not have lived.
When I first heard of Christian Science, in 1926, 1 was suffering from a nervous breakdown, which later incurred the verdict from the doctor, "hereditary insanity. " Christian Science has taught me that as God's child man inherits only that which is good.
To one who has been raised in Christian Science, and who therefore has had little to overcome in the way of physical disabilities, it may have seemed hard to become cognizant of the value of this wonderful privilege. However, it is my desire to express daily my gratitude for Science, and to pattern my life after its teachings.
Some years ago I was very seriously injured physically. Much swelling, inflammation, discoloration, and great weakness resulted therefrom, and for some time I suffered great pain.
I am glad to certify to the truth of these two healings received by my mother through Christian Science. They are not the only blessings which we have been privileged to experience; but they brought such great enlightenment and conviction to me and to my family that we have become loyal students of Christian Science, firmly grounded in it.
I came to Christian Science not as one who is sick but as one seeking the truth. Chronic inflammation of the middle ear, from which I had suffered since the age of five as a result of measles, I did not consider as a sickness that could be healed, having become so accustomed to it.
It is now a good many years since a dear friend brought "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy from the public library for me to read. For months I had been recuperating from an illness, taking beef tea daily, hoping to regain strength.
When I first began to study Christian Science I was healed in just a few days of rheumatism and of a kidney condition which was fast developing into Bright's disease. In September, 1915, I was suffering so much that I was planning suicide, because I felt that I could not go on in this condition much longer.
From the time I was a little child I suffered much from rheumatism in my back and head, which caused severe headaches and much pain in the eyes, so I was unable to read for any length of time without suffering. I had to do much walking in the open air and a great deal of sport.
