"SONGS IN THE NIGHT"

From the July 1941 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Have ye not heard them in the silence
Of an overwhelming gloom.
When Truth itself comes gently seeking,
And evil says, "There is no room"—
Have ye not heard the Father's songs
In the night of earthly wrongs?

Have ye not sung with consecration
Hymns as Paul and Silas did,
Because no darkness ever compassed
The light of Love or heaven hid—
Have Ye not caught with ears that hear
Harmonies of Spirit near?

Have Ye not bowed before the dawning
Of your vision's brighter sun,
And Heard within that secret chamber
A hallelujah chord begun
that human tongue could never voice—
God's own bidding to rejoice?

Have ye not heard above the tumult
Of a world distressed and torn,
When glowed again hope's ebbing candle
And faith renewedly was born—
Have ye not heard ere came the light
Songs He giveth in the night?
