STEADFASTNESS

From the July 1941 issue of The Christian Science Journal

To him who has seen as the result of the teachings of Christian Science that evil is not power because God is all-powerful and ever present, the way is clear; the final outcome of every human situation in which he may temporarily find himself, is shorn of all possibility of uncertainty and fear.

The result of Daniel's experience in the lions' den whereby he proved the powerlessness of a murderous intent to destroy the human representative of God was the vindication of his faith and obedience. The immediate outcome for his own time was peace and righteousness. As the result of the king's decree, written to "all people, nations, and languages," complete allegiance was demanded to "the God of Daniel." And the reason given was: "For he is the living God. and sted fast for ever, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed, and his dominion shall be even unto the end. He delivereth and rescueth, and he worketh signs and wonders in heaven and in earth."

The nature of the God whom the king demanded that all men from henceforth should worship, had been revealed to him through the nature of Daniel himself. It was because of Daniel's steadfastness, his consciousness of immortality; it was because of his spiritual courage and integrity of purpose, that he was able to utilize those divine laws which, translated into human need, deliver and rescue. Responding to the example and demonstration of Daniel, the attitude and policy of Darius and his government were thereafter altered and improved.
