From the April 1959 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It is with joy that I acknowledge the protective, healing, and regenerating power of Christian Science. I am grateful to have been reared in Christian Science. Participation in Sunday School classes and the privilege of serving as a Reader in a Christian Science organization at college were indeed blessings. These activities encouraged me to apply the teachings of this Science to the many aspects of college life, including those of human relationships, social situations, and academic development.

The fact that I have experienced few physical difficulties, I attribute to the preventive power of Christian Science. However, one experience taught me much. I had severe pains in my abdomen for a period of weeks, and when they did not yield to my treatment, I sought the prayerful help of a Christian Science practitioner. I informed him that a member of my family, who was not a Christian Scientist, had had his appendix removed and that I was fearful of this condition.

The practitioner explained that my fears, which included the fear of fatality, were foundationless, because God is Life and Life is independent of matter. He pointed out that we must do our utmost to overcome this fear in our present stage of existence.
