At a time when I was very ill I prayed to God and asked Him to preserve my life for the sake of our three young children. I was suffering from many physical difficulties for which I had taken various medicines and had had different injections. My condition had grown worse, and I was near a nervous breakdown. In addition I was suffering from heart trouble and was unable to sleep.
One night I was so very fearful that in my distress I folded my hands in prayer with the earnest desire that the Lord would help me. My cry was heard, for the next morning, just when I thought I would have to go to the hospital, a Christian Scientist came to see us and talked to me about God's great goodness to His children. I listened attentively and was restored to good health. I turned to the literature with joy and read everything on Christian Science I could get hold of. Later on, I began a daily early morning study of the Lesson-Sermon, provided in the Christian Science Quarterly.
Since then about ten years have passed, and in our family we have experienced many proofs of God's care. Among others, we have had healing of bronchitis, fever, grippe, a skin eruption, warts, cuts, inflammation, bruises, burns, earache, and toothache. Also, a very crooked tooth became straight.
The children have told me of healing they themselves have brought about by their own understanding of Science. For instance, one day our eldest child said: "Mommy, this morning when I went to school, I had a pain in my throat, and it was hard for me to swallow. But I knew that it was not real, and at school I forgot all about it." She had learned that sickness is not real because divine Love, the only creator, does not make it, and she had been healed by acknowledging this.
When our son was four years old, he became very ill with a pain in his abdomen and was at times unconscious. When he heard that my husband wanted to call a doctor, he cried out, "No, let God help me!" We asked for the help of a practitioner, and through her prayers he was quickly healed. I have often thought of Christ Jesus' words: "Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein" (Mark 10:15)
A business problem was solved when I realized clearly what it means to cast "all your care upon him; for he careth for you" (I Pet. 5:7) That same week the right lessee was found for the property which my parents wished to rent, and the transaction was settled harmoniously.
Years ago my husband and I gave up paying into a sick benefit fund because I had gained an understanding that the real man is not ill, neither can he become ill. The savings thus made enabled us to think of building a weekend house, and I looked forward to having a place for quiet study of Christian Science. I thought of spiritual building stones, such as integrity, reliability, joy, and peace. When we realized that man is God's perfect child, and that he expresses God's ideas, difficulties were overcome, and we received the building permit which had at first been denied us.
Some years ago I was healed of painful lumps in my breast and of the fear of a so called incurable disease. Mrs. Eddy says on page 368 of Science and Health "When fear disappears, the foundation of disease is gone." Symptoms and pain both disappeared when I learned to be more grateful. During this time I joyfully sang and played hymns from the Christian Science Hymnal, and since then they have always comforted me when I have been working out a problem.
My gratitude for all these blessings is great. I am also grateful for membership in The Mother Church, for our beloved Leader, and for all that Christian Science is doing for the world.— Meldorf/Holstein, Germany.
