Almost a century ago, Mary Baker Eddy founded the Christian Science Sunday School. In the October 1895 issue of this magazine, she wrote the following special notice:
These simple paragraphs became the basis of the By-Laws in the Manual of The Mother Church giving Sunday Schools a permanent place in The Mother Church and its branches. Over the next years Mrs. Eddy gave few instructions about the outward form for Sunday School. Having established it on the timeless teachings of both the Old and New Testaments and "absolute Christian Science," she left its visible expression free to adapt itself to the needs of future generations.
This past October, the Clerk's Office sent a letter to all Christian Science Sunday School superintendents and staff around the world, asking for their experiences and perspectives. Among the questions asked were: "What new possibilities for our Sunday Schools have your experiences revealed to you? What fresh vision have you gained from looking at the Sunday School By-Laws in Article XX of the Church Manual? What outworn beliefs about Sunday School have you begun to challenge as you've become better acquainted with Mary Baker Eddy's radical spiritual vision of children, education, and Church?"
