Testimonies of Healing
I am desirous of expressing my gratitude for Christian Science through a written testimony. The saying, "Man's extremity is God's opportunity," was proved true in my case.
I should have written this testimony years ago, but it was hard for me to express myself well in the English language, as I was born in Switzerland. It was through a salesman who came to our place of business in 1906 that we first heard of Christian Science.
In the year 1923 my mother-in-law seemed to be suffering from vertigo and wondered if she ought to have her eyeglasses changed. She went to see an optician, who, upon examining her eyes, said he could not change her glasses without a prescription from an oculist, since she had a cataract on one eye.
I wish to tell of my healing in Christian Science, to prove that Christian Science healing is permanent: I was saved from a condition of total blindness thirty-four years ago, after one of the most noted oculists in the world at that time said I would be totally blind for life. My father had spent large sums of money on my eyes, to no avail.
Six years ago, when Christian Science was presented to me, I was very unhappy. I had undergone two severe operations in two years, the last one leaving me, after two months on my back, weaker and more discouraged than ever.
It is with sincere gratitude that I write this testimony. I am a butcher by trade.
When Christian Science was brought to me I was suffering from valvular heart trouble which was considered incurable and was said to be hereditary. I started studying "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and also asked for help from a practitioner.
"While I live will I praise the Lord: I will sing praises unto my God while I have any being. " So sang the Psalmist, and thus sings my heart daily in gratitude to God for the manifold blessings I have received through Christian Science.
At the time I came into Christian Science I had been suffering for over seven years and had been to the hospital four times, but had received no relief. At times my suffering was so great that a sedative would have to be administered, and then only temporary relief would be experienced.
I am grateful for all the blessings I have received through Christian Science, the knowledge of which came to me four or five years ago when I was in the depths of despair, having suffered for two years from a severe nervous breakdown. I had consulted over a dozen medical practitioners, and everything that was humanly possible had been done for me; yet when I was at last led to consult a Christian Science practitioner I was at the worst stage.
